Monkey Typing Test: Free Online Typing Speed Test

Free online typing test for speed, accuracy and keyboard familiarity

Monkey Typing Test by MonkeyTyping is a free typing speed test that measures your WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and consistency in real time. Choose a 15, 30 or 60 second test, practise with quotes, scripts and numbers in 50 languages, and play typing games, all with no signup. Every result is calculated in your browser, so a run starts instantly and nothing has to be downloaded.

Use the test to find out where you stand, then move into the practice tools below to build raw speed, accuracy and keyboard familiarity. Repeat runs in the same mode make small improvements easy to spot.

  • Typing speed measured live in WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and consistency
  • No account needed to test, practise or track progress
  • Progress, leaderboards and practice history saved to your device

Free Typing Test for WPM

WPM means words per minute. One word is counted as five keystrokes, so a test averages out your typing over a fixed amount of text rather than counting words literally. A free typing test for WPM gives you that number instantly, together with raw WPM, accuracy and consistency.

Accuracy matters as much as speed. Typing quickly with mistakes still leaves you slower in real use, because you have to go back and fix errors. The result panel shows accuracy and consistency next to WPM so you can tell whether a fast run was also a clean one.

A timed typing test works by showing you a passage and starting a countdown. You type as much as you can before the time runs out, and the app works out your speed from the characters you entered. Because every test uses the same rules, two runs in the same mode are directly comparable.

Repeated practice is what actually raises your typing performance. Each run shows which mode you are strongest in, and the practice tools below let you target the weak parts: listening and sentences, vocabulary, keyboard patterns, or a full game session.

Whether you are looking for a typing speed test to benchmark yourself, a WPM test to check on a month of progress, or a free word per minute typing test before a job application, the same measurement applies.

Monkey Typing Test Features

The typing tool above has four content sources and two extra toggles. Every option is available in the same config bar.

Time Mode

Choose 15, 30 or 60 seconds and type as much as you can in that window. The timer runs from your first keystroke, so no time is lost reading the prompt. The 60 second option works as a standard 1 minute typing test.

  • 15 seconds
  • 30 seconds
  • 60 seconds

Words Mode

Type a set number of words instead of racing the clock. Useful for a steady warm-up, because the word count tells you when to stop.

  • 12 words
  • 25 words
  • 50 words
  • 100 words
  • Custom 1 to 1000

Quote Mode

Practise typing real passages. Pick a length that matches your session: short quotes for a quick warm-up, large quotes for a longer run.

  • Short
  • Medium
  • Large

Numbers and Punctuation

Two extra toggles sit alongside the modes rather than being modes of their own. Numbers Mode swaps the displayed text for numbers, and Punctuation adds symbols. Both apply to Time and Words mode only, not to quotes.

  • Whole numbers, decimals, hex 0x, binary 0b, base32 codes and H:MM times
  • Typing numbers and symbols is where accuracy usually drops first

Script Mode

A fourth content source, opened from the search button in the config bar. It loads a longer script instead of a random line, so you can practise the same passage repeatedly and compare attempts honestly.

  • Browse and pick a script before you start
  • Content varies by language

Practice Typing in 50 Languages

The language selector in the config bar lists 50 languages, including English, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Urdu, Hindi and Arabic. The count is read from the application configuration, so this page stays correct if a language is added or removed.

Word banks per language

Word banks are loaded per language on demand, so switching language does not block the test. Words are drawn from the selected language rather than translated on the fly.

Quotes and scripts

44 of the 50 languages also ship quote and script content for Quote and Script mode. The remaining six (Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Ukrainian) have full word banks, so they remain selectable for the standard test.

Practice With Quotes and Scripts

Typing the same short passage over and over stops being useful fairly quickly. MonkeyTyping provides different scripts and quotes for typing practice, and the amount of material depends on the language you select.

A large language such as English carries roughly 5,000 scripts, Spanish about 2,000, and languages including Arabic and Bengali about 1,000 each. Many of the remaining languages ship around 300. Availability varies by language rather than being identical across the board.

Because the material differs between runs, you get a different passage each time. That is the point: varied content exercises more of the keyboard and more of your vocabulary, instead of memorising one short sample.

  • Open Script mode from the search button and browse what is available for your language
  • Quote lengths range from short to large

Typing Speed Leaderboard

The leaderboard ranks your best run per player, so the board reflects a real best rather than a lucky single attempt. The All Time, Weekly and Daily tabs are three views over the same results, not three separate rankings.

All Time

Your single best run from your full history, across every mode. This is the number that never falls.

Weekly and Daily

Points earned inside the current window rather than your lifetime best. Daily resets at local midnight and the week starts on Monday, so they show whether you are actually improving.

Mode filters

Narrow the board to a single test: 15 sec, 30 sec, 60 sec, 12 words, 25 words or 50 words. Punctuation and number variants are counted under their base time or word length.

Monkey Typing Lessons

Fifty short lessons across five modules. They start on the home row and finish with mixed characters, digits and symbols.

5 modules, 50 lessons

Home Row Fundamentals, Top Row, Bottom Row, Numbers, Symbols and Accuracy, and Typing Practice. Ten lessons in each module.

Repeated key patterns

Lessons drill repeated patterns such as fjfjfjf and usususu so a finger learns one key and its neighbours as a pair. Progress and best WPM are tracked per lesson.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a monkey typing test?

It is a free typing test that measures your typing speed. You choose a mode, type the text you are shown, and the app calculates your speed in words per minute along with raw WPM, accuracy and consistency. The test runs entirely in your browser, so it starts as soon as you press a key.

Is MonkeyTyping free?

Yes. The typing test needs no account and no payment. Creating a name is optional and only used to label your saved results and leaderboard entries.

How is WPM calculated?

One word counts as five characters, so WPM is the number of correct characters you typed divided by five, then divided by the number of minutes. Raw WPM counts every character including mistakes, which is why the two numbers differ once you start missing keys.

Can I take a free typing test for WPM?

Yes. Time mode runs for 15, 30 or 60 seconds and Words mode for 12, 25, 50 or 100 words, plus a custom count from 1 to 1000. Quote mode and Script mode are also available for longer passages.

How many languages does MonkeyTyping support?

50 languages are selectable in the typing tool, including English, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Urdu, Hindi and Arabic. 44 of them also have quote and script content for Quote and Script mode.

Can I practice typing quotes?

Yes. Quote mode has Short, Medium and Large lengths, so you can pick a passage that suits the time you have.

Can I practice typing numbers?

Yes. Numbers Mode is a toggle next to the mode buttons and replaces the displayed text with numbers, including whole numbers, decimals, hex, binary and times. It works in Time and Words mode.

Does MonkeyTyping have typing games?

Yes. There are seven solo typing games with 500 levels each, plus Keyboard Warrior which has 1,000 levels and multiplayer for two or four players. All of them are listed on the games page.

What is Keyboard Warrior?

A typing game where words slide down the screen and you have to type them before they cross the hit line. A level ends if you miss 10 letters or fall below the accuracy thresholds, and it has both solo and multiplayer modes for two or four players.

Does MonkeyTyping have typing lessons?

Yes. Fifty lessons across five modules cover the home row, the top and bottom rows, digits and symbols, and mixed typing practice.

Can I practice typing sentences?

Yes. The sentence practice system has 10,000 sentences grouped into parent and child categories with sets of ten. You listen to each sentence with text-to-speech and type what you hear.

Can I practice vocabulary?

Yes. The vocabulary system has 6,597 words. You hear a word and type it, then type a sentence that uses that word against a 30 second timer, and the sentence is revealed if you run out of time.
